Twelve Days of Sheet Masks

Christmas already feels like a long time ago, but last Tuesday (January 5) was technically the twelfth day of Christmas. Depending upon where you’re from, you may or may not be familiar with the Christmas carol “Twelve Days of Christmas”, where someone recounts the many, surprisingly bird-related gifts their true love gave to them over the Twelve Days of Christmas. Inspired by the song and interested in doing something advent calendar-adjacent for my friends & family for the holidays, I put together the “Twelve Days of Sheet Masks/Twelve Sheets of Christmas” this autumn.

The process started with matching days to sheet masks. Some of the days were pretty straightforward. “A partridge in a pear tree” became the jennyhouse pear sheet mask.

Others were a bit more … creative. Ten lords leaping totally makes sense with the Mizon “Enjoy Vital-Up Time Mask” lifting mask, right? Because leaping lifts you into the air. … As you might be able to tell, it was a bit of a process.

Because of my logical leaps, and because I felt the ingredients deserved it, I designed cards to insert in an envelope with each mask.

When the sheet masks arrive, I couldn’t resist laying everything out — literally. At least my kitchen floor was clean?

Due to the (limited) economies of scale with sheet masks, I decided to do ten sets. Many masks are available in ten packs from the brand itself or through retailers like Yesstyle, and when they’re boxed they tend to run about $2 USD per mask, which is about as cheap as you can find them.

This made for a whopping 120 SHEET MASKS for a budget of around $300 USD, or roughly $30 USD per twelve days.

Then it was time for assembly and decoration. The assembly was fun. The decoration? I have regrets.

It turns out that doing twelve days of festive sheet masks makes for a fair amount of decoration, even when you foist three sets off on your sister. It sounded like a lot of fun, and then I remembered that a) I’m bad at art and b) I have other goals and priorities in life besides doing bad art. But yours truly hand-drew art on 84 manila envelopes anyway.

One set of sheet masks made its way to France, four were porch-dropped to friends and I kept two sets — one for me and one for my husband, who was an invaluable supporter of my mess and creative process.

It was enough of a hit that I plan to expand my efforts next year. Drop a comment if you’re interested!
